“Over my numerous years of working with people, one experience remains present: I feel inadequate. I have a masters in Counseling, a doctorate in spiritual direction and 30+ years of experience listening to people and yet I am anything but an expert. And that’s a good thing. As a friend once said, “There are no experts in matters of the soul save one: the Spirit of God.” The good news is that God’s Spirit resides within me and hopefully within you, and so we have hope as we engage in meaningful conversations. What might the Spirit be doing that we can get in on?
Here is another reality I have discovered over the years: perhaps the most powerful thing we can offer another is presence. Sitting one last time with a young woman with whom I had meet for a year, I asked her what had been helpful. Her response shocked me: “You are the first man who has ever sat across from me, looked me in the eyes and listened.” As I drove home that night, her words haunted me, creating within me a paradigm shift. Perhaps what matters most is not insight or “expertise” but rather presence guided by wisdom. After all, what God offers us is the gift of His presence by the incarnation of His Son and the ongoing indwelling of His Spirit.
The Categories for Meaningful Conversation Seminars (CMC) are intended to help us think through some categories that when pondered and digested could potentially help us better be present first to the Holy Spirit and then to the other person. What does it mean to be present? What does genuine curiosity look like? How does paying attention to one’s own heart and soul while listening to another’s factor into the equation? These and many other ideas are what constitute the CMC seminars intended to help us become better listeners, friends, counselors and spiritual directors.”
